[ What a long few nights it had been. Tonight was no exception. Even though everyone said the days were getting shorter, it seemed as though they were only getting longer. Healing after healing had to be done; life after life saved on the street. It was exhausting. ]
“I’m sorry, what was that?”
[ She looked at the stranger with wide eyes and anticipation. They maybe held a twinge of sorrow and guilt at the missed words she hadn’t heard them speak. What if it was important? She was annoying enough as it was, wasn’t she? ]

“Nothing, sorry, I just –– ”
[ He saves a space in his words for a little bout of laughter. ]
“You’ve got something stuck to your shoe.”
[ He could be in a better mood today –– and he’s striving towards that, now, exposing himself to strangers. Still, despite his efforts, the day’s events excite something in him that doesn’t sit well with a man of his kind.
He’ll get his job back. Eventually. ]
