Her breath hitches in her throat, feeling his words on her skin about how sorry he was and how he couldn’t change anything. That was when the tears started falling. She could feel them now, soaking his shirt, skin. She wondered if she more than just cared about him then, like the l word coming into play. Her teeth found her bottom lip, stifling the tears and hushing the sniffles.

“Don’t say that—things can turn around, I—”

She pauses and pulls back, practically falling apart she pulls him in closer and kisses him. It’s a need more than a want, an anchor holding her down but keeping her up so she doesn’t collapse. It took everything in her power to be strong on a daily basis but now, right this moment she let that all go.

     He doesn’t remember the last time he hugged someone. Or the last time he saw a girl cry.

Maybe it was with his mom. Or Annie. Or something. Still, no matter how much he thinks about it, he always goes blank. There’s always something missing, someone he was supposed to hug, someone who was supposed to cry and be human and be real in front of him.

     Lani kisses him. And he kisses back, of course, because his hand kinda fits there in the crook of her neck, and his stomach might implode if he doesn’t. It scares him a little, though, seeing her like this. Because she’s not the kind of person who kisses sorry boys like him.

He pulls away after a few seconds he neglected to count, because he was a little busy, and happened to notice that they’d moved closer to the wall. And he looks at her, eyes hinged in red.

     “Do you feel sorry for me?”
